A REAL Prescription Drug Bill

Our seniors are treasures and to ignore their needs is a national disgrace. David Ashe will work to pass a Medicare Prescription Drug Bill one that gives real benefits and does not simply feed the greed of HMO???s and insurance companies. The current law that was passed by this Congress is described as ???the best we can do for now.” The bottom line is that the benefits to seniors is minimal but the benefit to HMOs and insurance companies is enormous. HMO???s and insurance companies will now collect billions in federal money. (more…)

Worker’s Rights

Our successful, market-driven economy rewards the best of the best in the workplace, and there is no worker like an American worker. However, American companies can find cheap labor overseas. And, there is a reason: Workers in some countries have no ability to enforce their rights or demand a living wage. In countries like China, rights exist on paper, but not in practice. Chinese workers have only the minimum amounts of salary, safety and rest to keep them alive, no more. (more…)

Military Retirees

Americans are taught to respect and cherish our elders. And, we must especially cherish the men and women who served in our military. Current policy short-changes our veterans with regard to hard-earned pensions and much-needed health care. For example, if a service member has incurred a disability after 20 or more years of service current policy will not allow that service member to receive a disability pension in addition to retirement pay. David is a student of Israel and Middle East history and understands the importance of key United States legislation condemning the ICJ’s decision on Israel’s Security Fence, Nuclear Nonproliferation as it pertains to Iran, and Foreign Aid. Like thousands of supporters across Virginia, I spent 13 hours at the polls on November 8 to help ensure voters knew that Governor-Elect Tim Kaine fights for working families. Over the last year, I have put my resources to work hosting multiple events for Tim Kaine and the strong candidates on the ballot with him. The ability to have been a small part of the victory is an enormous source of pride for all of us. And, it sets the tone for what we’ll accomplish together in 2006. (more…)

Veterans eye seats in congress

WASHINGTON - Veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are planning to challenge congressional incumbents on both sides of the political aisle in 2006, but which party will benefit remains to be seen.

While dispelling speculation that Democrats are actively recruiting war veterans to feed into the public’s growing concern over President Bush’s strategy in Iraq, party operatives say they are sure that such candidates could pose a formidable challenge to Republicans next year. (more…)

Two Iraq war veterans campaigning for congress

Patrick Murphy, D-Pa. and David Ashe, D-Va., are striving to complete the mission that U.S. Marine reservist and Iraq war veteran Paul Hackett (D) could not in early August, by becoming the first Iraq veterans elected to the U.S. Congress.

Murphy became a candidate for Pennsylvania’s 8th District seat in May. He was a pilot in the 82nd airborne division in Iraq and earned a bronze star. He raised a little more than $90,000 in five weeks according to the July 2005 Federal Election Commission (FEC) report; his cash on hand totals almost $79,000. It is a record for a first-time Democratic Congressional candidate in Bucks County. The Philadelphia suburbs- 8th District has been in Republican hands for the past 12 years with freshman U.S. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R) currently holding the seat. (more…)
